- Lesson 2 -

Students bring their "Me-bags" to the lesson

WE NEED "MESSAGE CARDS" ("GESTURES"), "HOST CARDS" AND "GUEST CARDS" ("EYE CONTACT") - TEACHER'S RESOURCES

DON'T FORGET THE ATTENDANCE SHEETS!

Student's book page 55. "Me-bag?- Warm-up:

Materials: Student book (click here to see the student's page)
Students: Groups
Rationale: Personal conversations based on memories, evoked by certain items.
Method: One person takes something out of his/her "Me-bag" and talks about it. Others can ask questions. The aim is to have students talking about events which have made a mark upon their lives, along with the items which help them to remember those events.
Notes:

Students can initiate the conversation, or other students can choose items out of bags and ask what they represent. This can be an interesting activity, sparking off conversations of the type which will be useful in the Chat Show itself. This technique could even be used in the chat Show.

REMIND STUDENTS TO FILL IN "MY ATTENDANCE SHEET" (STUDY BANK) FOR THIS LESSON.

Student's book page 55. "Gestures" - Warm-up:

Materials: Student book (click here to see the student page)
message cards (Teachers?Resources).
Students: Everyone
Rationale: Body Language - non-verbal communcation
Method: The teacher puts a message on the back of each student. Each student must then find another student to explain the message without saying anything, using only gestures and body language. When the message has been guessed, students write it in their books.
Notes: This can be performed in addition to "Me-bag" or in place of that activity. All activities in the Alternative Schedule are flexible in terms of when and whether they are used.

Student's book page 56. "Eye-contact?- Project-work:

Materials: Student book (click here to see the student page)
"Host cards"; "Guest cards" (Teacher's Resource 1)  (Teacher's Resource 2).
Students: Groups or pairs
Rationale: Focusing attention
Method: The teacher gives students a "host card" or a "Guest card". The Guest then speaks on a topic mentioned on the card, and the Host pays attention in a manner according to his/her card.
Notes: Students are encouraged to think about the influence of the listener on the speaker. Eye contact and body language can be important in helping to make an atmosphere conducive to open conversation.

Student's book page 57. "Janis 1" Listening homework:

Materials: Student book (click here to see the student page)
Cassette tape; Audio/Visual Library.
Students: Singly, then pairs
Rationale: This listening activity encourages students to listen to an interview and to elicit key words.
Method: Students go to the Audio/Visual library, find the correct tape and perform the task. They will need to play it a number of times to find all the missing words, so there will be a chance to learn how to use the equipment.
Notes: The script of the interview is in the Student book (p. 186). These homeworks are designed to help with the projects, but teachers might want to suggest other ways of preparing out of class.
