cassette player; music (teacher). |
| Students: |
Pairs |
| Rationale: |
Ice-breaker;
use of body language and gestures for dramatic effect and communication. |
| Method: |
Students walk around the room as
the teacher plays some music. When the music stops, students shake
hands with the nearest person. This should be done in the manner
of the situations mentioned in the book. Thus the first time this
happens, students will shake in the manner of two tennis players,
one of whom is the new champion. The music begins again and students
walk around the room shaking in the manner of the second situation. |
| Notes: |
As well
as being an interesting activity, the aim here is to show how much
body language can clarify roles and can ease communication. |

Project-work:

| Students: |
Groups/whole
class |
| Rationale: |
Casual Conversation |
| Method: |
Step 1:
Students sit in two lines facing each other, as at a dinner
table. The Host calls out a number, and the students talk to the
person opposite them about the topic that matches the number in
their books.
Step 2:
After 2 minutes, the Host calls out another number. Students
move one place to the left and start a conversation (on
a new topic) with the new partner.
Stage 3: This can continue until
all the topics have been covered.
|
| Notes: |
This activity or one similar to
it has been used before, but this should present no problem. This
Project is a review of conversational techniques, and it will
be good for students to know the basic format of any activity.
This "Dinner party" format encourages students to speak
easily and flexibly on quickly-changing
topics. |

"Cassette Journal" ? Homework:
| Materials: |
Student
book (click here to see the student
page)
Cassette tape; |
| Students: |
Singly, or pairs |
| Rationale: |
Self-assessment;
ongoing personal record |
| Method: |
Students expand their Cassette
Journals by recording their own input to the Presentation |
| Notes: |
Each student will say part of a
Presentation when it is performed and will therefore have something
to record. This speech, however short, should also have a structure,
even though it is a sub-section of the
whole. The activity should help students to rehearse their parts,
as well as adding to the record of their ongoing development in
spoken English. |
