Teacher's Notes
- Lesson 3 -

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING their MASKS TO LESSON 3

REMIND STUDENTS TO FILL IN THEIR ATTENDANCE SHEETS
FOR THIS AND EVERY LESSON.

Student's book page 89. "Introductions" - Warm-up:

Materials: Student's book (Click here), masks.
Students: Pairs; groups of three.
Rationale: Ice-breaker; use of gestures for dramatic effect and communication.
Method: One student (wearing his/her mask) introduces him/herself to a partner, without saying anything. Only gestures and body language can be used. The partner then introduces the first student to someone else, using speech. The original student checks on veracity, but still cannot speak.
Notes: Hands, signals, pictures, facial expressions, etc. can be useful to convey information about age, home, family, hobbies and routines. The masks can add an extra dimension to this Information-transfer activity.

Student's book page 89."Miming" - Project-work:

Materials: Student's book (1) Student's book (2) (click here to see the student's page).
Students: Groups
Rationale: Performing a story. Narration.
Method:

Step 1: One student reads the first sentence of one of the short stories in the students?book. At the end of the sentence, he/she pauses.

Step 2: The other students perform actions to portray concepts in the first sentence.

Stage 3: The first student reads the next sentence and pauses. The other students perform actions to portray concepts in the second sentence. This continues until the story is finished.

Notes:

This activity will give students a chance to think about the Drama that they will perform:

Do they want a narrator?

Will they have dialogs?

Will they perform every event?

Will the actors speak?

Students should also be thinking about making the dialogs and preparing any props that they need. The performance will be three lessons later.

Student's book page 89. "Cassette Journal" ? Homework:

Materials: Student's book  (Click here); Cassette tape;
Students: Individuals or pairs.
Rationale: Self-assessment; ongoing personal record.
Method:    Students expand their Cassette Journals by recording their own input to the Drama.
Notes: In addition to recording input on learning goals (as in the student's book), each student will say part of a Drama when it is performed and will therefore have something to record. This speech, however short, should also have a structure, even though it is a sub-section of the whole. The activity should help students to rehearse their parts, as well as adding to the record of their ongoing development in spoken English..
