The Way Ahead   News Index (Student's book)

Teacher's Notes
- Lesson 3 -

IN THIS LESSON WE NEED A NEWS VIDEO, THE "PUERTO RICO" TEXTS AND THE FACT SHEET (TEACHER'S RESOURCE).

Student's book page 41. "Anchoring" - Warm-up:

Materials: Student book (click here to see the student's page)
Students: Singly
Rationale: Mimicking body language and other non-verbal aspects of the Presentation. Realization of the importance of these aspects.
Method: The video is replayed a number of times. Students try to: i) breathe at the same time as the announcer; ii) use the same gestures; iii) put on the same facial expression; iv) use the same hand and head movements.
Notes: This exercise can be useful for the students in their preparation for their own News Broadcast, showing them how much information is transmitted independently of words. Thus it could be useful to cut the volume on the Video.

Student's book page 41. "Puerto Rico" - Project-work:

Materials: Student book (1) Student book (2) (click here to see the student page)
(Teachers' Resource 1 ); (Teachers' Resource 2 ); (Teachers' Resource 3 ); (Teachers' Resource 4 ); (Teachers' Resource 5 ); Fact Sheet (Teachers' Resource)
Students: Groups or pairs
Rationale: Data collection. Identifying key words and ideas.
Method: The articles are put on the walls around the classroom. Students read them and search for the key information asked for on their Fact Sheet.
Notes: This is an opportunity for students to practice skimming, so a competitive aspect could be introduced. Such data collection can also lead into a Documentary (not necessarily about Puerto Rico), as suggested in the Student Book.

Student's book page 43. "Epitaph" - Homework:

Materials: Student book (click here to see the student page)
Students: Singly, then groups
Rationale: This encourages students to think about values, in preparation for a "Human Interest" section of a News Broadcast.
Method: Students think about the concepts for homework, then discuss the ideas next lesson.
Notes: A follow-up could be to make student self-epitaphs and to put them on the walls

REMIND STUDENTS TO FILL IN "MY ATTENDANCE SHEET" (STUDY BANK) FOR THIS LESSON AND THE NEXT LESSON.
