The Way Ahead   News Index (Student's book)

Teacher's Notes
- Lesson 4 -

IN THIS LESSON WE NEED A NEWS VIDEO/AUDIO TAPE AND A RECORDING OF "AMERICAN PIE"

Student's book page 43. "Shadow Boxing" - Warm-up:

Materials: Student book (click here to see the student's page)
News Video, News audio tape
Students: Singly
Rationale: Exact reproduction of words and phrases. Attention to delivery. Presentation English
Method: The Video/cassette tape is played and replayed a number of times. Students try to i) say the words with the announcer; ii) exactly mimic intonation, stress and rhythm.
Notes: This exercise can be useful for helping students to focus on delivery. It can begin with short segments repeated a number of times. Students can also do this activity by themselves if they wish, in the A/V library.

Student's book page 44. "American Pie" - Project-work:

Materials: Student book (1) (click here to see the student page)
Cassette Player and tape "American Pie"; Student book
Text (Teacher's Resource)
Students: Groups or singly
Rationale: Listening activity. Identifying key words.
Method: In Version 1, students listen and gradually fill in their own sheets (Student book). In Version 2 they pass their book to the right each time the song is played (they should be in circles for this). In both versions students sing along for the final time.
Notes: The lyrics for the song are in the Student Book, page 185, and on the following page in this book. Students might also want to find out about the events mentioned in the song.

Student's book page 45. "Cassette Journal" - Homework:

Materials: Student book (click here to see the student page)
Cassette Journal (tape); recording equipment
Students: Singly, then groups
Rationale: Opening contribution to the Cassette Journal; an interview-style positive self-description
Method: Students choose qualities that describe people they know (student book). They then underline all the positive words on the page, and cross out the negative words. They then complete a self-descriptive paragraph (using positive words) and record themselves speaking it.
Notes: The Cassette Journal begins to chart the year's studies and impressions and ideas. It can be reviewed by the teacher any time,  though Mid-term will be appropriate if it is not submitted before then. The teacher might like to add some comments at that time, but it is not necessary to allocate a grade for what is basically a personal document. This activity prepares for the "Tell us about your strengths and weaknesses" questions that appear in Interviews, and also helps the student to think in positive terms about him/herself

REMIND STUDENTS TO FILL IN "MY ATTENDANCE SHEET" (STUDY BANK) FOR THIS LESSON AND THE NEXT LESSON.¡¡
