Teacher's Notes
- Lesson 5 -

REMIND STUDENTS TO FILL IN THEIR ATTENDANCE SHEETS
FOR THIS AND EVERY LESSON.

Student's book page 80. "Just a Minute" Warm-up:

Materials: Student's book (Click here);
Students: Groups
Rationale: Speaking skills
Method:

Stage 1: Student A is the timekeeper and the scorer. He/she chooses a topic from those on the page (Student book) and asks another student (Student B) to speak for one minute on that topic.

Stage 2: While Student B is speaking, the other students listen for hesitation or repetition. If they hear either of these, they knock on their desks and say the word "hesitation!" or "repetition!"

Stage 3: If Student A decides that the call was correct, he/she asks the student who was knocked FIRST to continue with the topic, until the minute is up.

Notes: The 1 minute does not start again with the new student, but continues. The timekeeper therefore needs to keep an eye on the watch when students claim hesitation or repetition. This activity can take some time to "take off" while students are overcoming lack of confidence, but once they have the idea, it can be useful in promoting a continuous flow of ideas.

Student's book page 81. "Cassette Journal" ? Homework:

Materials: Student's book  (Click here); Cassette tape;
Students: Individuals or pairs.
Rationale: Self-assessment; ongoing personal record.
Method:    Students expand their Cassette Journals by recording their own input to the Presentation.
Notes: Each student will say part of a Presentation when it is performed and will therefore have something to record. This speech, however short, should also have a structure, even though it is a sub-section of the whole. The activity should help students to rehearse their parts, as well as adding to the record of their ongoing development in spoken English..

Student's book pages 78, 79. "Beliefs About Language Learning" (BALLI) ?Homework:

Materials: Student book (Click to see the student page.)
Students: Singly, or pairs
Rationale: Learning strategies; student perceptions; self-assessment.
Method:

Version 1: Students do this questionnaire at home as a self-commentary on their perceptions on language learning.

Version 2: Students use the questionnaire to survey opinions of classmates or students in other classes on this topic.

Version 3: The questionnaire can be used for the activity "Let's Make a Survey" and the data collated for the Presentation.

Notes:

¡¡

Student's book: "Legends of China - 5" - Homework:

Materials: Student book (Click here to see the student page.);
Students: Singly or in groups
Rationale: Reading; Cultural study
Method: Teachers can ask students to use this page in suitable ways. For example, reading of this text could lead to further research and data collection. Students could collect similar data about myths in their own country. Students might want to make a role-play or a video.
Notes: Teachers should be flexible on the use of this page. It offers an opportunity for self-directed work and can lead to project work.
