Session 1, Week 1

Before the Session:

1.       Resource Box: Prepare a Classroom Resource Box. This shared resource is a useful place to keep activity cards, game boards, strip story texts, etc. and classroom supplies. Contents of the box should include (as appropriate):

  •       2 or 3 paper knives or pairs of scissors
  •       at least 6 large dice (and board-game markers if possible)
  •       rubber bands
  •       2 or 3 glue sticks
  •       scotch tape
  •       pens, pencils, board pens, chalk
  •       etc. (stickers, labels, scrap paper)

2.       Session Duration: The sessions in this book (see page 1) last for 50 minutes. If your classes have different durations, you need to adjust the sessions. For example, a two-hour block, this would represent 2 sessions.

3.       Attendance Sheet:

  • Write the dates of each session on the register. Class Journal, page 9.

4.       My Classmates:

  • Prepare blank sheets of A4 paper for students who do not have a copy of the Workbook in Session 1 (one sheet per person).

5.       Can You …?:

  • Prepare a game board for each group of 4 students. It is a good idea to have one board in reserve as well. Class Journal, page 37.
  • Prepare dice – one for each group.
  • Prepare one set of 120 cards. Divide these among the groups.
    Class Journal, pages 39 - 53.

6.       Have You Ever …?

  • Prepare a game board for each group of 4 students. It is a good idea to have one board in reserve as well. Class Journal, page 38.
  • Prepare dice – one for each group.
  • Prepare one set of 120 cards. Divide these among the groups. These are the same cards as for Can You …? Class Journal, pages 39 - 53.

7.       Photo Pages

  • Put your photo in the first photo box and fill in your details.
Remember you will need to do this for each
    U2U class.
    Class Journal, pages 13 - 15.

Scheduled Events:

1.       Attendance Sheet: Pass this around the room, so that students can enter their names and other details. Asking students to take this responsibility is an effective and efficient allocation of classroom time. It also demonstrates to students that they will be participating in classroom administration as in every other aspect of the course. Class Journal, page 9.

2.       My Classmates: This activity is in the Student Workbook (page 2), but if students do not have the book for the first lesson, they should transfer the information into their Workbooks as their first homework assignment.

3.       Can you …? , Have you ever …? : These are board games, which the teacher brings to the classroom.

4.       Photo Page: Mention to students that they need to bring a photo to the next class, so that they can put it in the Class Journal (pages 13 - 15) along with their personal information. Note that the first box is for the teacher’s photo/information. If this is already completed, with photo and introduction, the teacher will be offering immediate positive role-modeling for the students.

Teacher notes:

l        My Classmates:

n          A4 blank paper, in case students without books need extra sheets.

n          Draw a diagram on the board for these students:

n          Write sample language on the board (Student Workbook, page 2).

n          Let the students finish My Classmates at their own rate. As students complete this activity, get them to sit down in groups of four to play the board games.

l        Can you …? , Have you ever …? Game Boards:

n          Prepare the game boards and the cards for your classes. Students will play these games in groups of 4, so a class of 20 students needs a minimum of 5 boards (it is useful to make one spare board).

n          There are 120 cards in one set. Divide these equally among the groups.
