Scheduled Events:
1. Attendance Register: Pass this around the room, so that students can enter their names and other details. Class Journal, page 9.
2. Photo Page: Pass this around the room, so that students can paste on their photos and add personal information. It might take a few weeks for students to complete these pages. However, there is no need to keep reminding students about this, since they will see the Class Journal every session, along with the photos of those who have completed this task. Class Journal, pages 13 - 15.
3. Round Table: This whole class activity is not in the Student Workbook.
4. True or False? : This whole class activity is not in the Student Workbook.
Teacher notes:
The activities for this session presume that many students will not have the WB. Therefore the teacher is asked to supply interactive activities which will immediately get the students talking.
Round Table: Set up the desks/chairs before the class begins. Make two lines of desks/chairs, facing each other, like a dinner-table.
True or False: Give one card to each student. Ask them to find out whether the statement on the card is true or false. When they finish one card, give them another card (e.g. the blank cards). At this stage, students are discovering the process of collecting information in the class. This is an ice-beaker, and there is no need for students to further process, record or analyze the information. These elements will emerge in subsequent sessions, as students learn how to collate and report on their findings.
Encourage the students to stand up and to do this activity without rearranging the desks. Students should be interacting and moving around the classroom.
