  1. Attendance Sheet: Pass this around the room, so that students can enter their names and other details. Class Journal, page 9

  2. Course Questionnaire: Student Workbook pages 11, 12.
  3. How Often ? Class Journal, pages 63 - 65. This activity is not in the Student Workbook.
  4. Math Puzzle: Student Workbook page 13.
  5. Participation Self-assessment (1): Student Workbook page 284, Class Journal, pages 11, 12.

Teacher notes:

The activities for this session presume that all students have the Student Workbook, even though one of the activities is not in the Student Workbook.

Course Questionnaire: This activity requires students to read through the Introduction Section (which is online in English), and to discover the objectives of the course, and the assessment procedures. Students should be clear about their learning responsibilities from this point. For this reason, students who arrive after this session, or who are absent during this session, need to complete this questionnaire.

How Often ?: Since this activity is not referred to in the Workbook, the teacher can put sample language on the board. Students (groups of 4) can devise a game without teacher direction, though simple instructions on the board can help to get the activity under way. When students devise their own version of the game, it is interesting (and challenging) to ask them to explain their version to other groups.

Math Puzzle: This is a valuable student-centered activity focusing on listening, comprehension and problem-solving.

Participation Self-Assessment: A note appears to the students at the bottom of page 13 of the Student Workbook. Students assess their participation to date (Student Workbook p. 284), and mark this assessment in the Class Journal, pages 11, 12 (in the column headed "1st"). The Class Journal needs to be circulated during this (and the next) lesson for this to occur.
