Teacher notes:
l The Prize Strip Story: There are two texts (each with two versions – basic & advanced) for this activity in the Class Journal. The teacher should select the text(s) appropriate for the students and give each student one sentence strip. It might be an idea to use both basic texts together. While working on the speeches, dictating and writing the sentences, and finally putting them in sequence, there will be much unconscious structural analysis going on, in preparation for the mini-presentation.
l The Prize Acceptance Speech: Tape the text on the wall. Remind students to take turns in visiting the texts. If this activity takes too long, have some spare texts ready (in the Resource Box) to give groups to use at their tables.
l My Prize Speech: Students have seen examples of presentation and acceptance speeches by now. They have also practised role plays. This is the time for them to assign roles and prepare their speeches for the mini-presentation, which will occur next session.
l Remind students to practice their presentation outside of class hours (see note in Student Workbook, page 37). If this is not possible, the teacher should be understanding in terms of expectations. Some students will be sufficiently challenged in reading the sample texts in a public-speaking situation.
