Hours 1 & 2(120 minutes): Introduction: Scheduled Events.

    1. Attendance Register: Pass this around the room, so that students can enter their names and other details. Asking students to take this responsibility is an effective and efficient allocation of classroom time. It also demonstrates to students that they will be participating in classroom administration as in every other aspect of the course.
    2. My Classmates: This activity is in the Student Workbook (page 4), but if students do not have the book for the first lesson, they should transfer the information into their Workbooks as their first homework assignment.
    3. Round Table This whole class activity is not in the WB. Resources for this activity can be found on the Online Class Journal
    4.  Photo Page: Mention to students that they need to bring a photo to the next class, so that they can put it in the Class Journal along with their personal information. Note that the first box is for the teacher¡¯s photo/information. If this is already completed, with photo and introduction, the teacher will be offering immediate positive role-modeling for the students.
    5. English Reflections: "Today's Thoughts" (pages 1 - 11)

Teacher notes:

  • The activities for this session presume that many students will not have the Student Workbook. Therefore the teacher is asked to supply interactive activities which will immediately get the students talking. It is important to note that this first session is not a throwaway lesson. Students must be involved from day 1, minute 1, even if they don¡¯t have the books. The teacher needs to prepare a number of materials for this, but the effort will be worthwhile.
  • Round Table Set up the desks/chairs before the class begins. Make two lines of desks/chairs, facing each other, like a dinner-table. Place one card on each desk/chair. Ask students to talk with the person opposite about the topic on the cards.
    •  Method 1: After 1 minute, ask students to move one place to their left (leave the cards on the desk/chair).
    • Method 2: After 1 minute ask students to pass their cards one place to their left.
    • Repeat this process for about 20 to 30 minutes in total.

Hour 3. (60 minutes)

Personal study hour

  • English Reflections, page 11.
