Week 8 Preparing for the Mini-Presentation

    Assignment:

    • English Reflections: "My Reflections" (pages 42 - 47)

Hours 1 & 2: Scheduled Events:

    1. The Prize Strip Story Student Workbook, page 32
    2. The Prize Crossword Student Workbook, pages 33, 34
    3. The Prize Acceptance Speech Student Workbook, page 35
    4. Sample Acceptance Speeches Student Workbook, page 36
    5. My Prize Speech Student Workbook, page 37
    6. English Reflections: "My Reflections" (pages 42 - 47)

Teacher notes:

  •  The Prize Strip Story There are two texts (each with two versions - basic & advanced) for this activity in the Online Class Journal. The teacher should select the text(s) appropriate for the students and give each student one sentence strip. It might be an idea to use both basic texts together. When students finish the activity, encourage them to find the answer texts in the Online Class Journal. While working on the speeches, dictating and writing the sentences, and finally putting them in sequence, there will be a lot of unconscious structural analysis going on, in preparation for the mini-presentation.
  • The Prize Acceptance Speech Tape the text on the wall. Remind students to take turns in visiting the texts. If this activity takes too long, have some spare texts ready (in the Resource Box) to give groups to use at their tables.
  • My Prize Speech Students have seen examples of presentation and acceptance speeches by now. They have also practised role plays. This is the time for them to assign roles and prepare their speeches for the mini-presentation, which will occur next session.
  • Remind students to practice their presentation outside of class hours (see note in Student Workbook, page 33). If this is not possible, the teacher should be understanding in terms of expectations. Some students will be sufficiently challenged in reading the sample texts in a public-speaking situation.
