The assignments on this page are designed to help in the investigation of educational technology as an effective means of teaching English.

    The focus of these assignments is practical - the use of language-learning technology in the EFL classroom.


Preparing for the semester:

  • Buy a portfolio folder and bring it to the first lesson.
    • A ring-binder is a good idea for this, since pages can be moved and added.
  • Post a message on the course Forum.
  • Edit your Profile. Add a photo.
  • Do the Course Quiz. Submit the course quiz, print out your answers, and put them in your portfolio.
  • Check out the assessment schedule.
  • Download the assessment forms, print them out, and put them in your portfolio:

Week 1, Aug 29, 31

Week 2, Sept 5, 7:

  • Check out email penfriend sites
    • Click on "Study links" on the home page.
    • Select email-pal links.
    • Find an email friend.
    • This might take time, but don't worry - you will find someone eventually.
    • Start writing to your email-pal.
  • Print out a Portfolio Entry Sheet and put it in your portfolio.
  • Continue with your Speaking Journal, and continue sending emails to your email-pal
  • Check out the multimedia glossary (on the home page, left column)

Week 3, Sept 12, 14:

  • Print out a Portfolio criteria sheet and bring it to class.
  • Do one of the "Learning Activities" from Chapter 2 of TTELL (Technology and Teaching English Language Learners) (pages 48 & 49).
  • Visit the websites on page 49 of TTELL.
  • Add an entry to the Eng. Ed. Tech Glossary.
    • Make sure it is automatically linked.

Week 4, Sept 19, 21:

  • Print out a Review for the Portfolio Conference  sheet.
    • Fill it in, and put it in your portfolio.
  • Do one of the "Learning Activities" for Chapter 3 of TTELL (pages 78 & 79).
  • Visit the websites on page 79 of TTELL.
  • Start thinking about your project with others in your group.
  • Continue writing to your email pal and recording your Speaking Journal.


Week 5, Sept 26, 28:

  • Have a Portfolio Conference (1) with members of your group. Enter the scores in the Class Journal.
  • Do one of the "Learning Activities" for Chapter 4 of TTELL (pages 110 & 111).
  • Visit the websites on page 112 of TTELL.
  • Print out your emails and responses and put them in the portfolio - every week!
  • Continue recording your Speaking Journal.
  • Continue preparing your presentation with others in your group.

Week 6, Oct 3, 5 (Chusok):

  • Fill in an ongoing self-assessment.
  • Do one of the "Learning Activities" for Chapter 5 of TTELL (page 159).
    • This is a big Chapter, and the learning activities are difficult. 
    • Don't spend too much time on this (unless you want to!). 
    • Brainstorm in groups, and write down your ideas in your portfolios.
    • Perhaps this assignment could turn into a project idea.
  • You have been writing to a pen-pal for some weeks now.
    Print out your emails and his/her responses and put them in the portfolio - every week!
  • Continue recording your Speaking Journal.
  • Continue preparing your project with others in your group.

Week 7, Oct 10, 12:

  • Hand in your Speaking Journal to the professor this week.
  • Do one of the "Learning Activities" for Chapter 6 of TTELL (pages 184 - 185). 
  • Print out your emails and his/her responses and put them in the portfolio - every week!
  • Prepare your project with others in your group.

Week 8, Oct 17, 19:

  • Print out a Review for the Portfolio Conference  sheet, fill it in, and put it in your portfolio.
  • Continue writing to your email pal and recording your Speaking Journal.
  • Prepare your project with others in your group.
  • Add an entry to the Eng. Ed. Tech Glossary.

  • Have a Portfolio Conference (2) with DIFFERENT people.
  • Fill in an ongoing self-assessment.
