The assignments on this page are part of the participation mark and the portfolio mark. They are designed to help in the development of prose composition teaching and performance skills. The focus of these assignments is practical. They will also give you a valuable record of the work you have done this semester. Many assignments will also help you prepare for your Practice lesson.

Preparation for Week 1. Do these BEFORE you come to the first class.

  1. Check out the home page
  2. Obtain a portfolio folder. A ring-binder is a good idea.
  3. Subscribe to the Email Group for this course (TEFL_Writing). You can do this on the home page.
  4. Do the questionnaire about the course.
    • Submit your answers to the professor. (Press "Submit")
    • Print out your answers and put them in your portfolio.

Week 1:

  • English Reflections: "Today's Thoughts" (pages 1 - 11)
  • Check out the professor's introduction
  • Post a message on the Google Group Site (TEFL_Writing). Introduce yourself to course members.
  • Send a photo of yourself to the professor by email.
  • Download the assessment sheets, print them out and store them in your portfolio.
  • Download and print out the assessment schedule.
  • Find an email pal.
    • Write to him/her every week.
    • Put your messages and the responses in your portfolio.

Week 2:

  • English Reflections: "My Reflections" (pages 12 - 15)
  • Find an email pal.
    • Write to him/her every week.
    • Put your messages and the responses in your portfolio.
  • Write a personal introduction. Print it out and put it in your portfolio.
  • A Writing Book, Unit 1, Handwriting. Fill in pages 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14.

Week 3:

  • English Reflections: "My Reflections" (pages 16 - 19)
  • Start thinking about your Presentation. What lesson content will you choose? How will you use it? What learning materials do you need to design and produce?
    • When you give a presentation lesson:

Week 4:

  • English Reflections: "My Reflections" (pages 20 - 23)
  • A Writing Book, Unit 3: Greetings.
    • Make a greeting card (any topic), with appropriate words.
    • Put it in your portfolio.
    • Perform a self-assessment/peer-assessment using this sheet.
  • Continue sending emails to your pal.
    • Print out the emails (and the replies) and put them in your portfolio.
  • Fill in an ongoing self-assessment sheet and put it in your portfolio.
  • Continue thinking about your Presentation. What lesson content will you choose? How will you use it? What learning materials do you need to design and produce?


Week 5:

  • English Reflections: "My Reflections" (pages 24 - 29)
  • Fill in a Report Sheet and put it in your portfolio.
  • Check out the MoE curriculum guidelines.
  • How is your handwriting? Try these sheets.
  • Continue thinking about your Presentation. What lesson content will you choose? How will you use it? What learning materials do you need to design and produce?

Week 6:

  • English Reflections: "My Reflections" (pages 30 - 37)
  • Begin your article for the class newspaper.
  • A Writing Book, Unit 5: Notes and messages.
    • Write a note based on Unit 5 (any type of note)
    • Put it in your portfolio.
    • Perform a self-assessment/peer-assessment using this sheet.
  • Check out the mission statement.
  • Continue writing to your Email pals and thinking about your Presentation.

Week 7:

  • Hand in your English Reflections to the professor.
  • English Reflections: "My Reflections" (pages 38 - 41)
  • A Writing Book, Unit 7: Home and Health
    • Write a recipe or menu based on Unit 7
    • Put it in your portfolio.
    • Perform a self-assessment/peer-assessment using this sheet.
  • Fill in an ongoing self-assessment sheet and put it in your portfolio.

Week 8:

  • English Reflections: "My Reflections" (pages 42 - 47)
  • Report Sheet
  • A Writing Book, Unit 6. Invitations
    • Write a letter of invitation/acceptance/regret based on Unit 6
    • Put it in your portfolio.
    • Perform a self-assessment/peer-assessment using this sheet.
  • When you make your presentation lesson, put a copy in your portfolio, along with your self-assessment sheet, a lesson plan and an explanation of the lesson structure, aims, content and methods.


Week 9:

  • A Writing Book, Unit 8: Travel
    • Make a writing activity for middle school students, based on Unit 8.
    • Put it in your portfolio.
    • Perform a self-assessment/peer-assessment using this sheet.

Week 10:

  • A Writing Book, Unit 9. Money and Banking
    • Make a writing activity for high school students, based on Unit 9.
    • Put it in your portfolio.

  • Review for the Portfolio Conference

Week 11:
