Teaching English Prose Compostion
Class Newspaper:
News, views, current affairs, etc., from class members

Welcome to the class newspaper!

A class newspaper is an example of the sort of project that teachers can use to encourage authentic ("real-life") use of English in their classrooms.

If we start an English newspaper in our middle/high school class, students can choose the topics to write about (individual relevance), help each other in producing the final written version (peer collaboration and error-correction), work in groups or individually, and view the final result on the classroom wall, or in an actual printed newspaper. When making the final copy for printing, students might help the teacher in editing, proofreading, and layout.

Reading, writing, speaking and listening, can all be promoted through this sort of ongoing project.

Project-work promotes motivation, involvement in learning, use of integrated skills, meaning (relevance), process and product. Examples of projects that are well-suited to the English class are: dramas, presentations, newspapers, magazines, email-projects, pen-friend projects, and travel-brochures.
